One of the most frequently searched phrases in the run-up to Christmas is Christmas decorations. And it's completely understandable. After all, each of us wants to make our home more pleasant for the most beautiful holidays of the year.

We commonly understand the word decoration as "ornament". A kind of accessory whose task is to beautify something. However, the original Latin word decus, from which the word decoration is derived, has a much richer meaning. We can translate it not only as decoration, but also honor, respect or seriousness. Thus, it is not only a kind of unimportant accessory, but quite the opposite: decus is something that imprints an essential and important feature on its subject, which should be emphasized. The Christmas decorations we are looking for are meant to elevate our homes from ordinary to extraordinary, from mediocrity to exceptionality, from ordinary to festive.
Perhaps the most widespread Christmas decoration in our environment is the Christmas tree. The first mentions of the Christmas tree come from the 16th century from the German environment. Later it spread to the surrounding countries. It first appeared in the homes of wealthy townspeople and what we know well today happened: the habit observed in famous personalities began to spread in the general population.

Hans Greiner from the German town of Lauscha founded a glass workshop in 1597 and also produced glass bead garlands and pewter figurines that could be hung on the Christmas tree. His descendants continued the glassmaking tradition and in 1846 the first glass Christmas decorations were made.

At first, Christmas trees were decorated modestly, especially in the homes of ordinary people: with dried fruit or homemade decorations made of paper, straw and corn husks. In 1882, just two days before Christmas, Thomas Alva Edison demonstrated electric lighting on a Christmas tree, and today we can't even imagine a Christmas tree without the lights.
